Maria Munk was born on November 6, 1887 as daughter of Alexander and Aranka Munk. Only 24 years old she commited suicide. Her parents commitioned Klimt with a portrait posthum of their daughter.
Ria Munks mother Aranka, born Pulitzer, was the sister of Serena Lederer one of the most important patronesses of Klimt. She persumably established the contact to Klimt.
Klimt manifests the beauty of the young women without any traces of death- Ria seems to be sleeping peacefully.
