The year of 1900 marks the beginning of Klimt’s summer holidays on Lake Attersee. A close friend of Klimt, Paul Bacher, helped to find an adequate accommodation. The guesthouse of a brewery in Litzlberg was adequate to host Klimt and the Flöges during their summer holidays until 1907. In a letter to Marie Zimmermann, at that time Klimt’s companion and mother of his two sons, he mentions the painting swamp. It was the time when he decided to concentrate on landscape paintings. Klimt accomplished swamp on the shore of one of the ice ponds near Litzlberg.
