Klimt spends the summer of 1899 in Golling near Salzburg together with relatives and members of the Flöge family. This is he place where this painting was accomplished. It is he first quadratic landscape Klimt painted. Only in the early morning hours the light on the pond reflects the shore on the water surface. The painting was first exhibited at the seventh exhibition in the Secession in Vienna in 1900.
