This painting marks the beginning of a series of small format symbolist pictures created between 1898 and 1907. They are strongly affiliated to the Fakultätsbildern, where flowing weightless bodies dominate. In 1897 Rheingold from Richard Wagner was performed at the opera in Vienna and it is very likely that Klimt was inspired and showed here the Rhein daughters whirl over the river.
