The painting of an old woman takes a special position within Klimt's oeuvre.
Klimt rarely depicted old people with a none portrayal character. This somber atmosphere, the reduced colour and the rough ductus fit very well in the gloom of the Wiener Kunstschau 1909 where the painting was shown together with paintings of the young Expressionist Schiele and Kokoschka.
